The Neurodiversity of ADHD
Whether you’ve been pathologized from a young age, are in the exploration stage of learning if an ADHD label fits you, or newly diagnosed and wondering where to go from here, we’re available to support you. All our relationships with neurodiversity and ADHD are nuanced due to how incredibly personal this community inherently is. Despite the many perspectives out there, let’s explore ADHD with a vernacular that authentically describes you – whatever that may be. We can learn to love our brains while managing the pain and hardships that can arise navigating a neurotypical world.
Those of us that associate with the ADHD label can struggle with:
- organization and time management
- focus and prioritization
- seeing past the details and acknowledging the bigger picture
- feeling lonely and misunderstood
- maintaining meaningful relationships
- managing expectations
- identity; feeling like a failure or “not good enough”
- shame and guilt
- depression, anxiety, and trauma
How can ADHD therapy help me?
ADHD therapy offers a path towards self-acceptance and growth. It revolves around two central aspects: developing practical coping skills to work smarter and not harder, as well as unpacking the pain that has (and is) caused by existing in a world that isn’t built for a brain like ours. The goal is to help individuals exist and participate more comfortably in a neurotypical world while staying true to their neurodiverse selves.
Growing up in a society that may have labeled you as lazy, unreliable, too much, or not smart, often leads to internalized shame, regret, and grief. How could someone not be sensitive to rejection in an environment like that? You may have difficulty trusting your own judgment and feeling a sense of belonging. You have so much to offer yourself, your relationships, and society. Let’s work together to reframe what you’ve been told and discover a more empowering perspective.
developing your own sense of structure and adapting it to meet the needs of systems when necessary
discovering when and how to have the capacity to engage
learning the signs of your own dysfunction and how to take a step back
accepting yourself and connecting with others authentically
acknowledging trauma and communicating compassionately
understanding what you are capable of
feeling self-aware, resilient, and flexible
unpacking where negative self-talk comes from and separating the words of other’s from your own
compartmentalizing your struggles and treating them as they come up |
Receiving a diagnosis is optional in utilizing the ADHD lens to view your own brain. While we do not diagnose ADHD as therapists, we have guided numerous clients through ADHD-focused therapy in order to validate our neurodiverse community and help people live more fulfilling lives.
