About Hormone Readiness Assessments (HRA)
An HRA written report is sometimes requested by a doctor prior to accessing gender-affirming hormone replacement therapy (HRT) if they do not feel adequately prepared in providing you with this care. Anyone who is experiencing discomfort with their secondary sex characteristics can qualify for HRT in British Columbia, as HRT has been observed to help with dysphoria. In general, it helps people feel more comfortable in their bodies and presentation. The written results of an HRA can be useful in affirming gender-related care for medical practitioners in British Columbia and also other provinces or countries.
An HRA interview is not meant to gatekeep someone from HRT. It is not meant as “proof” that someone is “trans enough”. I think of it more as an assessment to determine if now is a good time for you to begin the HRT journey. It is also an opportunity to discuss any questions or concerns you have with an informed mental health professional. I embrace the WPATH (World Professional Associate of Transgender Health) standards of care during our HRA and while communicating with your medical professionals.
- A 50-90 minute virtual interview
- A written report of that interview (provided within 2 weeks)
The cost of an HRA is $260, and includes:
My Role
The reason I trained to become an HRA assessor is because I wanted the opportunity to be a supportive professional for trans people within an oppressive medical system. I know how frustrating the bureaucracy can be and I know how marginalized my trans siblings are. Providing just a spark of light in an overwhelming process is a way I can give back to a community that has always shown me love.
Counselling sessions are not a requirement to access an HRA but can be helpful, especially if you are juggling anxiety or personal doubts. Some people also find it helpful to participate in counselling sessions with their assessor following an HRA interview. If you are interested in these additional supports, please reach out. I am here to help you process your lived experience and unpack your history with gender.
