 neurodivergent counselling
for neurodivergent people

We deliver impactful therapy treatments for those with ADHD, AuDHD, and autism, always coming from a place of affirmation and strength. All of our therapists come with lived experience of neurodiversity.

Neurodivergent-affirming counselling enables people to develop a sense of direction, gain control of their lives, improve their mental health, and discover their authentic selves.

  • improve your productivity, organization, and decision-making
  • develop emotional regulation techniques to move through frustration, trauma, anxiety, and burnout
  • identify patterns that are sabotaging your relationships
  • manage rejection sensitivity, trauma inherent to the neurodivergent experience, and RSD
  • explore how to use masking intentionally and productively – when it serves you, and when it is safe and empowering to unmask
  • leverage your strengths and be patient with your weaknesses
  • find an outlook that is authentic and true to yourself
  • identify and reach your goals

Growing up in a society that may have labeled you as lazy, unreliable, too much, or not smart, often leads to internalized shame, regret, and grief. How could someone not be sensitive to rejection in an environment like that? You can learn to trust your own judgement, reframe the stories you’ve been telling yourself, and find a more powerful perspective.

The Difference: We aren’t just counsellors, we’re people with lived experiences of neurodiversity with compassion, empathy, and understanding for those trying to hack it in a neurotypical world. We believe in serving community, from within community.

What Neurodivergent Therapy IS

It’s about acknowledging there are different ways of being, that are not necessarily right or wrong. It’s about empowerment and learning to be kind to yourself. It’s about leveraging your strengths and being patient with your weaknesses. It’s about developing skills and finding an outlook that is authentic and helps you achieve your goals.

What Neurodivergent Therapy ISN’T

It’s not about being ashamed, or trying to change you fundamentally. It’s not about trying to mask and hide and blend in.

It’s not about being someone you’re not.

We meet you where you are.

  • Maybe you’ve been newly diagnosed, and now looking back on your life suddenly a lot of things click and make sense. This eureka may be tainted with frustration and grief at not having this information sooner. Maybe if you had that understanding earlier, if you had supports in place, things could’ve turned out different. But now that you have an explanation, where do you go from here? How do you make a change?

  • Or maybe neurodiversity isn’t anything new, and you’ve been a veteran of phone alarms, to-do lists, and juggling prescription picks-ups for a long time. You’ve been making it work, but does it really need to take this much energy? Now you’re finding yourself in a position where you could do with some clarity and perspective.

  • Perhaps you don’t have an official diagnosis but a lot about neurodiversity resonates with you. You don’t need to have an official label to move forward and start feeling better. You can get unstuck, and we’re here to work with you if you’re interested unpacking whether pursuing an assessment makes sense. We can help you navigate this process of a diagnosis, and work with you to find the right medication and dosages that work.

Here’s what you can expect when you work with us:

Knowledgeable and skilled: Our therapists are Master’s level trained Registered Clinical Counsellors (RCC) who come armed with our smarts and a keen sense of instinct. We are able to adapt our sessions using techniques from (but not limited to) cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), attachment theory, narrative therapy, and humanistic gestalt to deliver tailored and specific counselling that work the best for you in achieving your goals. We also understand the limitations of these techniques when working with those who are neurodivergent, and make the appropriate adjustments.

Neurodivergent-Affirming: All our therapists are neurodivergent and our therapy techniques are strength-based. Your journey thus far reflects your creativity, resilience, empathy, and strength. We will use these qualities to develop fresh tools and strategies. Empowerment starts from building upon your authentic self.

Trauma-informed: we understand therapy can bring up unexpected traumas and anxieties and we are able to support you through this. We create a space that is safe and welcoming.

Inclusive: Our therapists are either part of the queer community or allies. We recognize that there are many ways of being. You don’t have to feel the need to explain your gender identity, sexuality, or non-traditional relationship style to us.

How much does therapy for ADHD, autism, or AuDHD cost?

Specialized neurodivergent therapy sessions are $145-165/50 minutes for individual counselling, and $195/50 minutes for relationship counselling. There are a limited number of sliding scale spots available.

Is therapy covered by insurance or health benefits?

All therapists are Registered Clinical Counsellors and covered by most extended benefit plans. If you are a post-secondary student, you may also have coverage for therapy through your student health plan. Coverage through the Autism Funding Unit (AFU) can be use for individual or family counselling. If you do not have coverage and find it cost-prohibitive to access therapy, we have low-barrier options with our counselling interns whose sessions typically cannot be claimed on insurance.

How do I access counselling? Do you offer online therapy?

Yes! We have options to conduct sessions either through online video, phone, or in-person at our wheelchair-accessible downtown Vancouver location. We can see clients virtually throughout all of BC, and across some other Canadian provinces. Please ask us!

Do you work with children, teens, or adults?

We currently see both adults and teens, as well as couples / relationship counselling.

Can I get a diagnosis for ADHD, autism, or AuDHD through therapy?

No, as therapists we do not provide assessments or a diagnosis. You also don’t need an official diagnosis to access our services. Many clients come to us as adults who have realized that neurodivergence resonants with and explains why they are the way they are. Sometimes a self-diagnosis is enough to understand ourselves, though we have guided clients through their official diagnosis journey if they are looking for external validation, medications, or to access accommodations.

How do I know if Sunward Journeys is the right fit for me?

What sets all of our counsellors and interns apart, is that they are neurodivergent-affirming and have lived experiences of neurodiversity themselves. We offer a 15 minute FREE consultation call to chat about what you are looking for help with, to get a feel for us, and to get matched with a good fit for a therapist.

Feel free to roam, tic, stim, or fidget during sessions.

Sunward Journeys is founded by August Wambold, RCC, a queer therapist with ADHD.
